We are delighted to welcome Rainer Hedrich, Chair Professor at Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology, back to IZ LIST. As a close collaborator, two years ago, he joined us to talk about using ion channel-based optogenetics to study membrane transport and remotely control plant action and development. This time, he will take us one step further into the fascinating world of plant calcium signalling.

Calcium ions (Ca²⁺) are important signalling molecules in plants, helping cells translate environmental stimuli into physiological responses. Yet, understanding exactly how calcium signals are generated, interpreted and translated into cellular responses remains challenging. One reason is that changes in Ca²⁺ are closely intertwined with changes in the electrical properties of the cell membrane. Recent advances in plant optogenetics are opening up new possibilities. Light-activated ion channels can be used to manipulate ion fluxes with high temporal and spatial precision, providing new tools to investigate — and potentially rewire — calcium signalling in living plants.

In his talk, 'Rewiring Ca²⁺ Signalling in Plants with Light', Rainer Hedrich will explore this emerging interface between plant physiology, ion channel biology and optogenetics. We look forward to welcoming Rainer Hedrich back to Berlin and to another exciting discussion at the intersection of light, signalling and plant biology.
