We were happy to be able to support Frederick Saulich during his research stay the the Sattler Lab at the TUM in Munich and were excited to read his experience report.
Report
In late spring 2024, I had the privilege of spending two months in Munich, Germany, to
enhance my understanding of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. This
opportunity was part of our collaboration with the Sattler group at the Bavarian NMR
Center (BNMRZ) at the Technical University of Munich. My stay was generously
supported by a travel grant from the interdisciplinary center - Life in Space and Time
(IZ-LIST). The BNMRZ is a state-of-the-art facility equipped with high-field NMR
spectrometers, including a 1.2 GHz instrument. The project focused on purifying
several fluorescently tagged proteins for phase separation studies and determining the
three-dimensional structure of my key protein.
These tasks significantly increased my theoretical knowledge and practical skills in NMR spectroscopy and protein purification. For instance, Figure A shows a NMR spectra of my key protein, while Figure B illustrates the phase separation behavior of one of the purified fluorescently tagged proteins. These examples highlight the successful outcomes of my stay in Munich.
The travel grant from IZ-LIST significantly eased the financial burden by covering my housing costs, allowing me to concentrate on my research and learning without worrying about accommodation expenses. In addition to the hands-on lab training, I attended several seminars on advanced NMR techniques. These sessions provided valuable insights and were crucial for my professional development. The collaborative environment at BNMRZ also facilitated networking with researchers from various disciplines, helping me establish connections that may lead to future collaborations and research opportunities.
The opportunity to work at BNMRZ expanded my expertise in NMR spectroscopy and will have a lasting impact on my academic and research career. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and for the funding from IZ-LIST that covered my housing costs.
